APHO will operate an educational service that will provide basic education and training in vocational skills for as many patrons as are able to utilize it. We believe that the main focus of APHO should remain compassionate caring for the needs of the poor, infirm, destitute, and elderly; but we are also aware that long-term giving of alms may be counter-productive to our intentions, that is, it may induce habits and attitudes of helplessness and dependence in those we seek to help. APHO intends that its educational program will make our patrons employable and eventually self-supporting. For those who succeed it is our ultimate dream that they will in turn be able to help other needy people-- as we have helped them.
At present there are 10 blind people (15-75 years old) under our care, but our overall plan calls for an operation of 50 students and 10 teachers (academic and vocational). We will draw our students from the blind, disabled, orphaned, abused and abandoned people--regardless of circumstances or background.
Some families among the street people comprise two blind parents completely dependent on young children. Our hearts go out in compassion to such people and we long to make some positive difference in their lives. We believe that if we-you and us--accept and practice the Principle of Universal Responsibility our generosity and caring can do much to improve the lot of these karimically unfortunate people. We sincerely hope that our appeal will receive support from those who approve of our compassionate efforts.
Here in Nepal the need for humanitarian help is almost overwhelming. This is an under-developed country, and a majority of the population falls below the poverty line. Many street people are so destitute that day after day they are reduced to scavenging garbage to find a few scraps of contaminated food to eat. We need all the help we can get from people of ordinary means as well as from those to whom fortune has been very generous. Our Organization and its clients are unable to thank donors with material rewards, but we offer our genuine gratitude on behalf of those we serve. We assure our donors that the nature of our existence is such that your compassion for and charitable help to the needy will surely redound to your peace and happiness.
